Welcome to The So Licky Rattery - SLKY

This is the home of the So Licky Rattery (SLKY); the home of loving and healthy pet rats in Kansas City.

We breed our rats solely to improve the rats in our own breeding lines and not to meet the demand of the public. We are a proud member of the Rat Fanciers of the Lakes (RFL), and as such, we strive to breed our rats to the standards set before us by URSA and the RFL code of ethics.

  • We believe in vet care for rats.
  • We believe in keeping accurate pedigrees for our breeding lines.
  • We believe in getting necropsies for all of our breeding rats.
  • We make all information about the health and history of our breeding lines public.
  • If for some reason a rat becomes inappropriate for our breeding lines, ethics, or goals; we will remove that rat and any of its effected offspring from our breeding lines while continuing to care for it as a beloved pet.
  • We don't believe in letting rat breeder politics affect the health, temperament, or conformation of our breeding lines.

We have been registered with the North American Rat Registry (NARR). Our official prefix is SLKY. If you are an adopter and wish to obtain a pedigree from NARR for our rats, we are glad to provide you with a NARR pedigree.

If you're asking what that means for you, it means that you will have to wait to get one of our rats because we only have a few available each year, but when you get that rat, it will be the healthiest and kindest rat that we can produce.

Rats are amazing pets. We feel that rats should be happy every day of their short lives. They give us so much in return for our affections. They deserve every ounce of love and affection that we can give them.

Our Breeding Lines
We are currently working toward developing two breeding lines: Russian Blue Satin and Russian Blue Point Siamese. We also are working on a third separate line that will help us to one day get a clean Russian Silver or American Blue for use in a Russian Silver Point Siamese line which will be merged with the Russian Blue Point Siamese line. These breeding lines are linebred and at times inbred. If you have questions about what that means, please e-mail me. We do this for the health of our lines.

Recently, we have been hearing a lot of people express fear of soy-based diets for their rats. We are proud to feed our rats soy. Harlan Teklad is an amazing food, and we recommend it for all pet rats. Here is an awesome blog post that well represents our feelings about soy in rat diets.
